Speakers Dave Hayward..Touching Up Our Roots
When StoryCorps Atlanta thinks of its few “regulars,” Dave Hayward’s name is right at the top. Through his organization, Touching Up Our Roots: Georgia’s LGBT History Project Initiative,
Dave is committed to capturing the stories of Atlanta’s sizable LGBTQ
community, and he has recorded a whopping 14 conversations with
StoryCorps Atlanta since we opened in October 2009. Dave describes
Touching Up Our Roots as an LGBT history project that “preserves,
promotes, and publicizes the contributions LGBT people have made, and
make to, civil rights, civic and neighborhood organizations, and culture
in Atlanta and in Georgia.” Equally important, he advocates the value
of preserving these stories and exemplifies the StoryCorps mission, “to
provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to
record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives.”

Dominique Huff
Dominique Huff is the Founder and CEO of the Tenth Amendment Media Group (www.tenthamendmentmedia.com) and Founder/Executive Director of the South Fulton Business Coalition (www.southfultonbusiness.com).
He has been in business since 2007. With the media outlets of TAMG,
he believes that all sides and views of a story need to be told. The
outlets are often the first and only to report on many matters in the
community. With the SFBC, he wants to ensure that South Fulton's
business and residential community are working together for economic
development and economic growth. In terms of LGBT issues, Huff grew
tired of the stereotypical talk shows that were promoted and geared
towards the community. He vowed in 2007 that he would create an
opportunity for LGBT people to have a radio show that keeps them
informed, entertained and in the know. In 2009 during a business
presentation to his interns, partners and radio personalities he
unveiled a proposed LGBT show that was ultimately developed by Meak
Productions into the now highly popular and acclaimed Same Gender Loving
Expressions. As a heterosexual ally, Huff believes that Constitutional
rights applies to everyone and he is doing his part to make sure that
is not forgotten. He also credits Meak Productions as they serve as the
LGBT liaisons for his businesses.

First information on IDAHO 2013 perspectives

Dear all,
As we are hearing more and more about plans developing for IDAHO-T
2013, we wanted to share with you some early information that might help
you plan ahead of your own IDAHO-T events, and connect to others.
For more info or input on any of the items below, please write to either:
contact@dayagainsthomophobia.org or joelbedos@gmail.com
We will be coming back with updates and new info (reasonably) regularly.
Wishing you all happy IDAHO-T preparations and please, as usual, keep
us informed about your plans, so we can share it with others and
develop further our vibrant and diverse mobilization in favor of sexual
and gender diversity.
The IDAHO Committee

1) Global IDAHO Mobilisation action

Following discussions with many organisations who supported the idea
of a joint IDAHO-T mobilisation action, the IDAHO Committee worked with
the activists who have developed the 'Rainbowflashmob' initiative over
the past years to launch a 'Global IDAHO-T Rainbow Flashmob'.
Like always with IDAHO-T actions, the idea is to have a very lose joint
'umbrella' to link us to one another without attaching this to any
policy agenda, which obviously can only be developed by participating
organisations locally.
We are working on a revised website for the RainbowFlashmob
initiative and on a teaser video to announce the initiative. Both should
be available early January in English, Spanish, Russian, German, French
and Portuguese. The teaser video will have no spoken or written
element, so it should be usable in all linguistic contexts).
The site will allow anyone to register an event and become a partner
of the initiative (the format of the event is very much open, with a
reference to the rainbow colors as main common thread). It should also
allow for individuals to participate online directly (tbc).
More info coming soon.

2) Fighting Stigma related to SOGI within projects focusing on HIV

Following many discussions since last summer's World Aids Conference
in DC, we identified the need to do more in depth work on how
HIV-focused projects take into account the fight against stigma related
to sexual orientation and/or gender identity. A general quick overview
of the field, and discussions with activists, identified a strong
interest for more concrete implementation tools and strategies, and the
need to increase institutions and donor agencies' attention to this.
We are in the process of discussing how to take this work forward and
we invite interested stakeholders to get in touch with us, specifically
around sharing experiences of using the IDAHO-T within HIV-Aids focused
programs. We are working at putting some activity together for IDAHO-T
2013 and suggestions are most welcome.

3) Policy agenda : Mainstreaming SOGI into development aid

In the wake of the conference we did last year with OECD, the World
Bank, Unesco and some bilateral aid agencies, we are looking this year
to continue the work of raising awareness of the economical cost of
homo/transphobia for developing countries. Again, organisations or
experts who want to join the existing working group are welcome to
contact us. Events for IDAHO 2013 are not yet planned.

4) International IDAHO Conference 'Joining Forces, Moving Forward : In Europe and Beyond"

The Dutch Government will be hosting a broad International IDAHO Conference, which will take place in the Hague on May15-17.
The aims for this IDAHO conference are "to promote emancipation of
LGBT people, to combat violence and discrimination based on gender
(identity) and sexual orientation, and to take stock of public
leadership, policy achievements and cooperation in Europe and beyond".
The conference will include high level plenaries and workshops,
including :

Govt. Focal Point Roundtable

European Gay Police Association Conference

ILGA-Europe Council of Europe project Roundtable

NATO LGBT informal Roundtable

International Rainbow Cities Roundtable

Council of Europe LGBT project partners Roundtable

Presentation of the Fundamental Rights Agency survey

5) IDAHO lessons to fight homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools

Although this theme was mainly our focus last year, we will keep
working with UNESCO again to promote the use of the IDAHO Lesson Plan
which the UN Agency developed last year. In 2012, some organisations had
also developed their own specific IDAHO kit, which can serve as a good
source of inspiration for those who would want to use the Day in 2013 to
address schools and other education institutions. Ressources can be
found at http://www.dayagainsthomophobia.org...
and
http://www.dayagainsthomophobia.org...

6) IDAHO resource kit on fighting 'reparative therapies'.

In response to strong interest from organisations, and to the growing
influence of dogmatic religious groups, we will be updating the
resource kit in Spanish which we have developed in 2011 and 2012 for the
Latin-American campaign 'Curas que matan' ('Killer Cures/Priests'),
which focused on reducing the influence of the so-called 'reparative
therapy' approaches. This should be done in January.
More info to come soon

Voice;
http://www.thegavoice.com/blog/politics/4635-ga-gov-nathan-deal-supports-mistreatment-awareness-day-but-not-a-day-against-homophobia

I am a resident of Georgia, and have been since 1995...the office of the Governor belongs to the people, and the people have the right to call, visit, and question all actions that come from it.

I attempted to do just that, after 1. receiving a letter of welcome for the second year in a row from the office of the governor. 2. I called and asked why the proclamation was denied again, since this year I met all the requirements for requesting the proclamation. 3. Last year it was explained that I failed to meet the 45 days advance notice of event by 2 days; this year that was not the case, so why not a explanation for denial. 4. I spoke to Alan Fox, the Editor for the Governor, he said that I would receive a proclamation...I asked if it would be in the form submitted, with the Whereas clauses as indicated in the request. The answer was 'yes'.

I received a proclamation pretty quick after that first conversation with Mr. Fox, much to my alarm, and dismay the proclamation had been altered...new event title, and none of the Whereas clauses were included. In fact by reading the proclamation you would never know that this document addressed 'Homophobia'; not once was the word Homophobia used, not once was there any indication that Homophobia, is dangerous, that it is lethal, and that it kills. Not once was there any indication that the state of Georgia would protect the lives of its residents, regardless of sexual orientation/gender identity. Not once was it implied or assumed that Homophobia is a result of fear and hate, based on myths and lies, caused by ignorance, misunderstanding and misinterpretations of holy scripture.

Okay, so Governor Deal ran the most homophobic election campaign in history of the state of Georgia...okay...he is a Repug...okay, he is a bible toting christian, okay...he is the Governor of a Red State...that has a constitutional amendment that prohibits same-sex marriage...okay...so...

Isn't it possible for the God fearing man...Nathan Deal to evolve...and simple catch up with the rest of the nation...but wait...I digress...let me finish my story before I lament on the humanity of the Governor...

After receiving the proclamation...which left me in a state of disbelieve...actually seeing this document...I urgently called the Governor' office again...again I got Alan Fox, Editor...who in turn referred me to Stephanie Mayfield, Press Secretary, after I could not get a reasonable answer to my question 'Why was the name of a International event changed'...I never received a reply to this question...but in the interim...I spoke to unknown female, who I assumed was the receptionist. Twice I left my number for a return call from Stephanie Mayfield, never a return call...I called as Press...to get a statement to my question, no reply from Stephanie Mayfield...but I did get a gentleman, named Brian Robinson, communication director, who asked me 'why are you calling this office'...I explained...but he still wanted to know why I was calling the office of the Governor. I proceeded to tell him that the office of the Governor belonged to me...as a resident of Georgia and a taxpayer...he proceeded to ignore my question...I asked as media...and again ignored and he hung up...I called back...got the receptionist again...and again I asked my question...requested a official statement...and the reply 'we are not talking...we're finished' click....

So..as a resident of Georgia, as a taxpaying citizen, as the organizer of event, and as media the office of the Governor decided that I was of no consequence...and that I did not have the right to ask the question, 'why was the name of an international event changed'...nor did I or the citizens of Georgia have a right to have the state of Georgia proclaim, May 17, 2012 as Georgia International Day Against Homophobia, to educate against hate, and fear and the dangers that is instilled in our society; the lack of basic humanitarian conduct, to protect life. Yet the City of Atlanta, Fulton County and the House of Representative...declared...and proclaimed May 17, 2012 to be recognized as Atlanta International Day Against Homophobia, and joined the world in acknowledging that all life is sacred...opposed to....

The Governor' Office...that has failed to protect LIFE...and the pursuit of happiness...that all people are equal...in the eyes of the law...and of our God...Betty Talkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04485119079838825798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5981397497330231479.post-1061278169998926612012-05-03T12:23:00.010-04:002012-05-03T12:44:57.504-04:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 79px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFtf_sdCjTlXTHsN6c8BPznZcjWKdsZlLsnQjHJM7ZzzZToEwoBuKrQOJfsIzSGXlFjS6OkB5uLHNLpZnWPmCD9YjcLVNp-k3IpzzveYkQR6E2HG7CKddduPKvRhQLaeelvHPw2nMmBgk/s400/en_camp2012_ban759.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5738348750179286738" />

IDAHO AROUND THE WORLD
Betty Talkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04485119079838825798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5981397497330231479.post-71405719145063601532012-03-18T02:27:00.019-04:002012-05-10T17:08:14.268-04:00

New and Expanded IDAHO

Alternative Perspectives, Meak Pro-Media and Tenth Amendment Media Group

PRESENT

IDAHO 2012...Expanded to 3 days of activities, celebrating our community, with our families, allies and Coming Out
Including a Fundraiser

May 7, 2012

Sexual Diversity in the WorkPlace...
IT PAYS OFF!

Day 1

May 13, 2012

For the second year, Rev. Suddenly from out of the shadows a guy jumped in front of me only inches away. Immediate concern filled my mind. Just how much paperwork would be involved at the local police station to explain me beating the fucking crap out of him? I ended up by simply frightening him off.

Also in Houston a guy tripped me in front of a few of his redneck friends when I was walking to the bathroom. In my 4" heels I nearly fell down. After I recovered my balance I went over to him and asked him if he felt comfortable having me embarass him in front of his friends by beating the living shit out of him. He soon left the club.

Getting away from my own situation some more stories:

A TS hooker once pointed out to me that cis-female hookers used pimps. Transwomen did not. She explained why: "We do not need to. If Johns mess with us we beat them up ourselves."

Finally the Atlanta police department put out a memo years ago about how to handle TS hookers. The memo advised the cops to pull their weapon on them. Apparently too many police were getting beat up by the hookers.

Moving on to history consider that the two toughest warriors in human history were trans or similar. Alexander the Great was a bisexual leaning towards mostly gay man who cross-dressed, wore makeup and perfume. Joan of Arc was a cross-dressing most likely androgen insensitivity XY female.

In conclusion one of the greatest dangers of transphobia is we're likely to beat the crap out of people who get in our faces.

See you tomorrow at IDAHO.

NerissaBetty Talkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04485119079838825798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5981397497330231479.post-40031293941482627192011-05-12T12:16:00.000-04:002011-05-13T16:33:04.882-04:00
The "Letter of Greeting" from the State of Georgia's Governor Nathan Deal
Please click on image to enlarge...

Betty Talkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04485119079838825798noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5981397497330231479.post-66625993096773316792011-05-08T22:32:00.019-04:002012-04-24T05:35:34.647-04:00This Day Is For You

In addition to doing a story collecting station (the logistics of which we're working out), we would like to give a king-sized platform to 6 guest bloggers to write about their experiences with harassment and discrimination for being LGB, trans, or Muslim. We are seeking bloggers willing to speak up and out against harassment: 2 gay people, 2 transgendered people, and 1 Muslim (We know a blogger who writes for an anti-Islamophobia website, and she's tentatively signed on already). Basically, we want to give a voice and a space for people to educate on the dangers of homophobia, transphobia, and Islamophobia. We will post these articles/op-eds/blogs on Atlanta's Hollaback as well as on the main site, which has an active readership in ten countries and 25 cities now (with 30 more cities coming soon!).

Do you know a few people that would be willing to have their voice heard around the world? Posting anonymously is absolutely an option for those who do not feel comfortable sharing their real names. Please feel free to pass this email along to your networks. The posts will go live throughout IDAHO week, from Sunday through Friday.

More on Hollaback http://www.facebook.com/ihollabackbetlear@yahoo.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06005269572205607420noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5981397497330231479.post-34907394422477275782011-04-09T22:43:00.002-04:002011-04-09T22:46:15.668-04:00New Sponsor for IDAHO 2011Just got word that Juxtaposed Center for Transformation has signed on as a sponsor for Atlanta's International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Islamophobia 2011...thank you Tracee...and board members of JCT...we are moving forward and we are moving together.betlear@yahoo.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06005269572205607420noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5981397497330231479.post-11879438765842969842011-03-27T21:58:00.009-04:002011-04-05T23:54:19.931-04:0013th Anniversary Church Without Walls Picnicbetlear@yahoo.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06005269572205607420noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5981397497330231479.post-59563075329157097562011-03-07T16:29:00.006-05:002011-04-05T23:46:45.420-04:00CHURCH WITHOUT WALLS<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimp_SBMJ6UXtMQOzEmSGi8BlkRjFD3Z1xFiITr1TLCbLnHCU-Rf8I6CiVccROSvvRzWgP-V77KCe7Bfvx6TkLXqWFS-Uw2foITi3PvU0S3kQ3LrfWr9kwFZPA_QjRLCqicshkIOHVLgIU/s320/paul_m_turner_gentle_spirit_christian_church_thumb.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581452684925203730" />

Church Without Walls will celebrate the theme of International Day Against Homophobia, Same-Sex Couples, on May 15, 2011.
A lesbian mom turned activist, she discussed her early days in the movement in her home state of California.

Last year, Robin undertook a prominent role as a co-organizer of the National Equality March on Washington, .D.C.

Today, with Kip Williams of GetEQUAL, she leads direct action and sometimes acts of civil disobedience to hold politicians accountable for their broken promises to the LGBT community. To read about GetEQUAL's mission, vision, theory of change and background, click here.

Involved in meetings about the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) currently stalled in the House of Representatives, Robin called in to Alternative Perspectives radio in Atlanta, GA, from Washington, D.C., during a break.
She included interviews from activists in Canada, where IDAHO originated, Ireland, and more that included co-organizer of Atlanta's IDAHO, Betty Couverier.

From the transcript:

BREEGE: IDAHO events included a Great Global Kiss-In in 30 cities. In Nigeria, a vigil was held to honour victims of gender hate crimes and in Russia, thousands of balloons were launched as a symbol of pride. Betty Couvertier, a radio producer and gay activist, is involved in the International Day Against Homophobia in Atlanta, Georgia.

COUVERTIER: IDAHO is a time to speak out and stand up and not be afraid. It is a way of combating fear and hate. It goes beyond tolerance. It is acceptance that knowing the people are what they are and that we are different sometimes and it is ok.
To read the entire transcript or to listen to the broadcast, click here.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5981397497330231479.post-62282421738897375942010-05-19T18:55:00.000-04:002010-05-20T12:56:29.037-04:00ProjectQ Atlanta news coverage of the 2010 event

Hugs, prayers and standing up against homophobia were the theme for the day on Monday as activists held two complementary events to commemorate International Day Against Homophobia in Atlanta.

The afternoon kicked off with a small rally (top photo) at 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue to support the Shirt Off My Back Campaign, which encourages people to donate unwanted clothing to charity. It’s organized by Laura Gentle, who helped organize public rallies in the wake of the Atlanta Police Department’s raid of the Eagle last September.

About three-dozen people attended the larger International Day Against Homophobia, which unfolded at Virginia Highland Church. Longtime LGBT activist and radio host Betty Couvertier (second photo, left) was a key organizer of the event, which was part of scores of similar gatherings across the globe to call attention to homophobia.

The speakers and hosts at the church read like a Who’s Who of LGBT Atlanta and included Pastors Chris Glaser (second photo) and Sonya Williams, activist Montee Evans, radio host [Miko] Evans, sports enthusiast Anne Barr, and Laura-Douglas Brown, who is co-founder of the GA Voice. . .
To read the complete ProjectQ Atlanta article, click here. We admire Karla Drenner for a lot of reasons. She's personable, courageous, super-smart, dynamic, and undaunted by homophobia. We're proud she serves in the Georgia House of Representatives (D-Avondale Estates) -- the first-ever openly lesbian member of the Georgia General Assembly -- and as a beloved leader in the LGBT community. On May 17, she spoke powerfully during Atlanta IDAHO.

In her official capacity as an elected representative, she presented a resolution during the event. If you click the image, it will reload with a zoom-in "magnifying glass" to enlarge so you can read it easily.
