Atlanta's International Day Against Homophobia

Atlanta -- known as an LGBT stronghold in the American South, an international city that hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics, and famous as the epicenter of the Civil Rights Movement -- will join other major cities around the world on May 17 in recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO).

Initiated by Fondation Émergence and for the first time in the world, a theme-day dedicated to the fight against homophobia was designed and set up in Québec on June 4, 2003. With the kind help of partners, this theme-day expanded to reach the rest of Canada, and then France and Belgium. In 2005, the IDAHO committee proposed the symbolic date of May 17. This committee and Fondation Émergence continue to extend this event to other countries.

More information about IDAHO is available at: http://www.homophobiaday.org

The 2010 campaign Speaking about Silence is aimed at the sports world. The purpose of the campaign is to make athletes, those closely or loosely involved in this community, the media, and the general population more aware of the need to combat homophobia linked to both amateur and professional sports.
